COMMON FIRST AID SKILLS IN A SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

First aid is the immediate care given to someone who has been injured or is suddenly taken ill. It can be provided by anyone until medical treatment is received. Here are some basic first aid skills that may be useful in a school environment:

  1. Responding to an unconscious person: Check the person's airway, breathing, and pulse. If the person is unconscious but is breathing and has a pulse, place them in the recovery position (on their side with their head tilted back).

  2. Responding to a bleeding wound: Cover the wound with a clean cloth or bandage and apply pressure to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding is severe, call for medical help.

  3. Responding to a burn: Cool the burn under cool running water for at least 20 minutes. Cover the burn with a sterile gauze or cloth. Do not burst any blisters.

  4. Responding to a seizure: Keep the person safe by moving any nearby objects out of the way. Do not try to stop their movements. Time the seizure and call for medical help if the seizure lasts longer than five minutes.

  5. Responding to a broken bone: immobilize the injured limb and call for medical help.

It is important to note that these are just basic first aid skills and are not a substitute for proper medical treatment. If someone is seriously injured or ill, call for emergency medical assistance immediately.
